Job Summary
The candidate will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily open-pit mining operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective production. The role requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining, strong leadership capability, and hands-on knowledge of open-pit equipment and processes. The supervisor will ensure all activities are conducted in compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Supervision
– Supervise daily open-pit mining activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and dumping operations.
– Ensure mining activities align with the short-term and long-term mine plan.
– Monitor production progress and ensure shift targets are achieved efficiently.
– Coordinate with mine planning, geology, maintenance, and safety departments to support smooth operations.
2. Safety & Compliance
– Enforce all mine site safety policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
– Promote a strong zero-harm safety culture across the workforce.
– Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and risk assessments before activities begin.
– Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, and implement corrective actions.
– Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and responsible mining practices.
3. Equipment & Fleet Management
– Oversee effective utilization and performance of heavy mining equipment, including:
Excavators
Haul trucks
Loaders
Bulldozers
Graders
Drilling rigs
– Coordinate with the maintenance team to ensure equipment availability and minimize downtime.
– Monitor equipment productivity, fuel consumption, and operational efficiency.
– Ensure operators conduct pre-start checks and follow equipment operating procedures.
4. Team Leadership & Workforce Management
– Lead, supervise, and motivate mining crews, equipment operators, and contractors.
– Allocate manpower and equipment resources effectively across shifts.
– Provide on-the-job coaching, training, and performance feedback to team members.
– Maintain discipline and promote teamwork and accountability.
– Support recruitment, onboarding, and development of mining personnel.
5. Reporting & Communication
– Prepare daily shift reports on production, equipment performance, safety issues, and operational challenges.
– Communicate operational priorities and updates to mine management.
– Participate in daily production meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
– Escalate critical issues affecting safety or production in a timely manner.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
– Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering or a related field (preferred).
– Minimum 5 years’ experience in open-pit mining operations, with supervisory responsibility.
– Strong understanding of open-pit mining methods and production processes.
– Proven experience managing heavy equipment operations, especially excavators and haulage fleets.
